Media should educate, not shame

"We commend 2OceansVibe for their swift action in taking Kellman off-air, in their public apology, and in their recognition of the link between such victimising behaviour and the broader climate of violence against women in South Africa.

We especially thank the listener who lodged her concern with the station - because whether you are a sex worker or not, everyone has the right to dignity.

We would like to voice our disappointed by Kellman's irresponsible behaviour on his Monday morning show.

Such so-called jokes only serve to perpetuate the prejudice and discrimination of sex workers, exposing them to abuse, such as that reported in the media this past weekend of the kidnapping and rape of a sex worker in Belhar.

Those in the media play a significant role in educating and raising awareness in society, and it is a pity that Kellman did not use this space more responsibly."

Sex workers can report any form of abuse they experience in their work: 0800 60 60 60
