Stop complaining and do something

accreditation
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone thought like us?

The world would run so much more smoothly and hey, maybe we would even have the solution to world peace.

You would never have to tell your partner or kids what you expected of them because they would already know (there’s the solution to world peace right there) and no one would get offended by how you choose to live your life because they would choose to live their lives the same way.

You would never get disgusted by walking into the office bathroom and finding the place in a mess because people would clean up after themselves the way you do and no more finding tea bags in the drain of the kitchen sink because well, that just makes no sense.

No more personal space issues on the bus because everyone would try to make themselves as small as possible to ensure enough room for all and people standing in the aisle with large handbags or backpacks would take them off and place them on the floor to not give fellow passengers neck ache has they tried to avoid being hit.

I wonder how some people seem oblivious to the fact that they are negatively impacting on someone’s day by running headlong into a situation or continuing a bad habit.

It is quite clear that the attitude of the day is, “to hell with everyone else, I’m doing this and tough cookie if you have to suffer the consequences”.

I am in no way suggesting that considering everyone’s opinion in every decision is a feasible option but if you stop to consider how your decision will impact others you could quickly assess whether it really is the best decision or if there is another option.

The world requires that we make every decision right now. There is no patience, time to think or time out from making choices and decisions. Everywhere you look there is something to read, something to buy, something to choose and I don’t know about you but I find it exhausting.

Every minute of every day seems to be taken up by something you have to have your brain engaged for so it actually comes as no surprise that we forget we are surrounded by fellow human beings who also have feelings, stress, worries and joys.

So, what is the solution? How can we get back in touch with our humanity and start living in the real world again? Well, I’m going to try and implement the following practices (rules sound too disciplinarian and the temptation will be there to break them):

1. No cellphone time when I am with family and friends (ooh, this is going to be difficult)
2. Look 5 strangers in the eye everyday and smile
3. If I see someone struggling with a pram or heavy package offer my assistance (if possible)

I’m going to keep my goals achievable (if slightly challenging) and see if I can achieve them this week. Let me know what you are planning to do.

This is my attempt to “be the change I want to see in the world” because we can’t keep complaining about the demise of humanity yet continue to do nothing. Imagine if everyone who read this decided to do the same.

This ripple effect could take off and we could start seeing and making a difference. Will you join me?
