Friends at work

Whether or not one should make friends in the workplace is a tricky subject.

Some people may be friendly and worth giving the chance, but if you work in a competitive environment you can also easily come to find that your co-workers have ulterior motives when befriending you.

Our readers share some thoughts in response to an article a reader submitted last week:

Kathy: I've made good friends and best friends through work.

Olga: Never take your work friends home with you.

Sabiha: It’s never a good idea to be friends with colleagues; I have been through that experience where I got my colleague a job because I knew the boss.

We both started working together, I trusted her and she would be so no nice to me, she introduced me to the other colleagues but little did I know that she would get  together with those girls and gossip behind my back.

Natasha:
Not a chance! I did it several times, and I was retrenched from two jobs. All my "friends" promised to keep in touch and meet-up and guess what I never heard from them again.

Bernice: There is certain line that gets drawn – but you ultimately spend more time at work than anywhere else.

Natalie:  Mostly 99% of your life, you are at work. Your colleagues can at least be your friends.

Thembeka: Hell no or else you will be miserable and resign.

Melanie: Oh gosh, I've made some really great friends in the workplace. I don't really think there is a line.

Sue-Ane: I also went through something similar. With me it was my direct supervisor, she befriended me the moment she saw me. She was much older than me but she was snooping around trying to find out about my personal life so she could gossip about it.
