Unpaid internships have the potential to solve a lot of South Africa’s economic and social problems, including the widening gap between rich and poor. The majority of South African school leavers start out their adult lives being unemployed.
Those who qualify on merit and can afford it, pay hefty tuition, accommodation and transport to attend tertiary institutions. Their goal is preparing for a future career. So students pay, instead of being paid, for an academic qualification that does not necessarily guarantee them employment.
