Book review: Bridget Jones’s Baby: The Diaries by Helen Fielding

Bridget Jones’s Baby: The Diaries by Helen Fielding (first published in 2016 by Penguin Random House)
In this prequel to Mad About the Boy, we discover how exactly Bridget got pregnant with her oldest, Billy, and journey with he through her tumultuous pregnancy.

Bridget dedicates this diary to Billy and says this is how he came to be, and even though it may be a bit scary at times, this is a story of how things can turn out okay if you just strive forward. Quite sweet, don’t you think?

Now, I’ll be quite honest, I was all set not to like this book because it was sold to me as the novel version of the movie which wasn’t based on a book. Confusing, right? Even though the movies are based on the original novels by Helen Fielding (which, in turn, were based on her columns in the Independent newspaper from the ‘90s), this book was based on the screenplay for the third Bridget Jones movie.

So it’s a bit cart before the horse, but since when has Bridget ever done things the way people expected her to?

So, yes, I expected not to like this novel, but I was pleasantly surprised and am now glad to say that I did enjoy quite a lot.

Helen Fielding kept the novel true to the rest of the series and Daniel Cleaver was there even though he’s not included in the movie.

So, basically, Bridget has sex with the two men she’s been in love with for ages, about a week apart, and then ends up pregnant. She has no idea who the father is and now must navigate her shotgun pregnancy with not one, but two fathers who were also thrown in the deep end.

The books have always been about thinking you should be in a certain place in your life, and how life has a funny way of showing you that you’re actually exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Bridget Jones’s Baby still has the lovely, heartwarming, witty sort of humour of the previous novels, but shows our favourite clueless middle-aged woman trying a bit harder to get her life together for her impending bundle of joy.

If you need something to take your mind off the disastrous US election results, or need something to read on your weekend away, take Bridget with you and give her a read. You'll have a bit of a giggle and get to visit an old friend.
