Seriously, why has Leonardo DiCaprio never won an Oscar?

Leonardo DiCaprio is up (again) this year for Best Actor at the Academy Awards for his role in The Wolf of Wall Street. In the film, which is based on a true story, Leo plays Jordan Belfort. Belfort was a wealthy stock broker in the ‘90s who was living the high life and fell from his high perch into a spiral of crime and corruption.

Just that little sentence alone makes me want to see the film. That, and the fact that Leo starred, and Martin Scorsese directed.

Have you ever seen anything Leo’s been in? Chances are you have. Because he has a wide range. From comedy to drama, suspense to romance; the man has done it all.

He’s been nominated a total of 5 times now – yes, I’ve said that before but FIVE TIMES, guys – for an Academy Award, including Best Actor in a Supporting Role for What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for The Aviator, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Blood Diamond, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for The Wolf of Wall Street, and shares the nomination for Best Motion Picture of the Year for The Wolf of Wall Street.

Personally, I think he should have been nominated for Django Unchained too, but whatevs.

So it’s been years of near misses, but will this year be any different? Probably not.

Let’s take a look at all the other nominees.

There’s Matthew McConaughey who lost nearly 20kgs to play a man dying of AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club. Chiwetel Ejiofor from 12 Years a Slave which is about a free black man who is abducted and sold into slavery. And, of course, Christian Bale for American Hustle and Bruce Dern for Nebraska.

Leo might as well present the Oscar to Matthew or Chiwetel himself. AIDS and slavery trumps corrupt broker.

But, could the Academy overlook the other performances and give it to Leo anyway? Highly unlikely, but not impossible. He has been in several critically acclaimed films for the last 20 years. The boy has earned his dues.

At this point it seems like they’re basically just teasing him.

Even the internet thinks so.
