Car Diaries: Suzuki Swift

accreditation
Tuesday:

"Cool! It looks like a Mini Cooper," I say before I can stop myself and wait for the car boys to roll their eyes and snort.

"Ja, actually quite a lot of people think so."

Who'd have thought? It seems I'll be a motoring journalist yet. One of these days I'll even be able to tell the difference between a Corsa and a Fiesta!

Still recovering from yesterday's crash with the Logan. Got into the car rather gingerly and inched my way home.

Oh, "the car" is charcoal. Or gunmetal grey, if you prefer. I do.

Wednesday:

Decided to stop being such a wimp. Will drive the new car with head held high and without knots in stomach. I pull away and am immediately astounded at the sheer power of the Suzuki. Swift indeed.

The Swift has a very sleek and lovely interior. The dashboard is beautifully designed with little touches (the aircon grid closes up like perfect little tiles) to make it special.

Just so you know: this little car isn't just cute. It kicks ass. Seriously.

Thursday:

Slight problem. Charles fell in love with the Suzuki. He wants to buy it immediately. Reminded him that we've just put in an offer for a house and we don't have the odd R130k lying around. He does not seem deterred.

Boys!

Sunday:

Went to Rooiels this weekend with friends. I was nice enough to let Charles drive.

Huge mistake.

After sitting in traffic and playing with the various controls on the dash and steering wheel – you can change the volume, open windows and basically rule the world by pressing a few buttons on the steering wheel – and then speeding down the curvy coastal road with the awe-inspiring vista to our right Charles is now completely besotted.

Reasons why my husband loves the car:

  • The grip on the road is amazing, with almost no body-roll.
  • The engine makes a very sexy sound... Once again... Boys!
  • It's beautiful.
  • It accelerates like a bliksem.
  • It's hella powerful for such a small car.

    Monday:

I fear Charles' enthusiasm is catching. Driving to work this morning I noticed the steering wheel is covered in leather and stitched in the inside of the wheel. Which makes driving not unlike gripping the inside of a taut leather-clad thigh.

    Tuesday:

Noooo! Lance from Wheels24 just filled me in on who my kind car-giving-connection, Deon, really is! Here's the heads up: he was like a super race car driver for ages! And he still does stunt driving often. Argh. This makes my little prang with the Logan sooooo much more embarrassing.

I think I should lie down now.

Anyway, to sum up about the Suzuki Swift:

  • I thought it was very sexy and pretty (unlike other Japanese cars).
  • It's much roomier than the Twingo.
  • The road holding ability feels excellent.
  • This baby corners as if it's on rails.

But we've established, once again, that I don't know jack about cars. So let's hear what Wilmer Muller, Editor of Wheels24 has to say...

One can't help but love Suzuki's Swift. At Wheels24 we have a longterm Swift and this little car continues to impress us everyday. Not only does it boast excellent value for money but it is a helluva good car. Yes, it might be small but it has a big heart. In terms of spec levels it compares favourably with its rivals, which includes the Toyota Yaris and Hyundai Getz. Also, the car is well put together and feels solid on the road. If you in the market for a small hatchback , the Suzuki Swift, with its cheeky styling and fun road manners, deserves your attention... It's hard not to be impressed by the Swift.
