Glam up your kitchen!

Where in your home do you spend the bulk of your time? If your family is anything like most then it's probably in the kitchen.

Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager of Tile Africa, shares her advice on how you can use tiles to create a warm and cosy feeling in your kitchen.

"Use tiles in warm rustic colours such as terracottas, warm gold and chestnut browns," says Kate. Bring warm colours into the kitchen by using, for example, red glass mosaics as splashbacks or behind a stove.

Tiles are the perfect solution for a kitchen floor, wall and counter top as they are durable, water resistant, easy to clean and will continue to look beautiful through many years of use.

Lighting is very important in a kitchen. While bright lighting is needed for food preparation, consider installing atmospheric pools of light such as lights set into the base of wall cupboards shining onto counters.

This is much more intimate than ceiling lights and creates a cosy atmosphere for when the family is eating and sharing their stories of the day.

Tiles are available in so many colours and materials that creating a space reflecting your personal style can be done with ease.

Tile Africa offers these handy tips when tiling your kitchen:

  • Do not use wall tiles on the kitchen floor. As kitchens are considered high-traffic areas, a suitably graded floor tile will ensure that your tiles do not crack.

  • Combine different sizes of tiles – the result will be a pattern on the walls or floor unique to you.

  • Use metal tiles behind your stove or on a whole wall to create a striking décor feature

  • Glass mosaic tiles add high-contrast colour to a neutral room and can be combined with larger tiles of differing materials to create visual interest.
