The latest tile trends

Tiles are the ideal flooring and decorative choice in bedrooms and living spaces and should not only be considered for the bathroom and kitchen, where it is traditionally installed.

Despite the global economic crisis, innovative design continues unabated. The focus on nature and natural materials persists in 2009 and new trends include fabric influenced finishes, metallic finishes, vibrant colour accents and the mixing of different sized tiles.

Kate van Niekerk, Tile Africa's marketing manager, describes the latest tile trends as seen at Cersaie, the key exhibition for the international ceramic tiles and bathroom furnishings industry:

Nature imitates life
"Green consciousness" is profoundly influencing home décor and design. But, natural materials require budget, specialised installation and on-going maintenance. For those who like the look of the real thing but not the hassle, the use of inkjet printing technology is making it possible for tile manufacturers to very realistically imitate the look of natural materials on tiles, including marble, natural stone, wood and bamboo finishes. Continuing with the natural theme, flowers and foliage are popular motifs.

Fabric flavour
Paisley, delicate lace, linen and canvas finishes were also seen on tiles, enabling home owners to create looks that are irresistibly feminine, or clean and masculine. The number of looks and styles that can be created using tiles increases every year as tiles become more adaptable.

Glamour is in
In contrast to the softer, more natural approach of numerous designers, luxurious metallic finishes in shades of gold, bronze, silver and pewter in tiles and mosaics made a significant impact at the show. This dramatic look is enhanced by accessories and moody lighting.

Colour me fabulous
While neutral palettes in tones of warm and cool greys, browns, whites and the natural stone shades of vanilla, ivory and warm honey remain hugely influential, designers are bravely adding vibrant colour accents and highlights in all areas of the home. Reds, black and deep grey are perfect in masculine spaces, while chalky shades of blue, green and pink animate kitchens, bathrooms, living areas and children's play area.

Mix it up
Gone are the days where one tile in one colour is used throughout a home. Large tiles, still very popular amongst designers, are being mixed with smaller tiles, either of the same or in a contrasting colour. Mosaics crafted from ceramic, glass, natural materials or metal are scattered in amongst plainer wall tiles to create both visual and textural interest.

Tile Africa stocks a wide selection of mosaics, ceramic and porcelain tiles, natural stone products, décor and accent accessories and bathroom ware. Their trained staff are always on hand to offer advice on every aspect of your remodeling or makeover project.
