Defining your fashion heritage

accreditation

What's your fashion heritage? This was the question posed by online shopping site 36Boutiques, ahead of this year's Heritage Day celebrations on 24 September.

Here are some of the comments sent to us by our readers:

Colourful cardigans

Amy: Whatever the season or trend, I just can’t step away from a soft cardigan. I’ve owned countless cardigans over my 23 years and yet my love for them never fades.

Trendy but traditional

Mpho: Being able to rock a pair of corporate heels while attending a ‘do that requires a traditional flair and still look smashing as an African woman.

Handsome headwear

Andrea: I grow up in a family of women who have embraced being natural. From my mom, grandmother and aunts, they all love headscarves and wear them in all sorts of ways. As a 30-year old, I've grown to love embellishing my head with scarves. It makes me feel African and proud.

When east meets south

Praveshnee: My fashion heritage is very diverse and I love it. I don't follow any particular trends because I'd like to think that I invent my own fashion style. Especially South African fashion. Sigh, if only I could afford it. Gavin Rajah, Thula Sindi, Leigh Schubert and Tiffany Amber are a few of the amazing African designers I love.

When it comes to being an Indian I love my traditional Indian attire example: Punjabi’s and Sari’s (keep in mind there are beautiful Indian wear with African prints). So, where does being an African fit in all of that?

Well, in my obvious love for tribal prints and African beaded accessories.

Striking skirts

Enid: The one item in my closet that is a firm fashion heritage is my African print skirt in beige, orange and red.
I have been stopped many times by ladies either asking where I bought it or literally wanting to buy it from me.
