Things between Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid’s family are getting messy.

The Pillowtalk singer, who has one-year-old daughter Khai with Gigi, has been accused of harassing the supermodel's mother, Yolanda Hadid. Here’s everything we know about the ongoing family drama.

THE INCIDENT

Rumours of an altercation between Yolanda and Zayn first surfaced towards the end of last month.

She claimed the singer “struck” her at his home in rural Pennsylvania while Gigi was away working in Paris.

Zayn had “grabbed and shoved her into a dresser, causing mental anguish and physical pain,”  the 57-year-old reality TV star said in legal paperwork.

In the court documents, Yolanda also accused Zayn of engaging in “continuous cursing”. She claims he called her “a f**king Dutch slut” and ordered her to “stay away from [my] f**king daughter.”

The 28-year-old musician responded immediately in a statement, saying he “adamantly” denied the accusations.

THE CHARGES

A day later things took a legal turn when Yolanda laid a case against Zayn, who was charged with four instances of harassment.

The former One Direction singer pleaded no contest to the charges. Zayn received a fine and was placed on a 90-day probation for each charge, accumulating to 360 days total. The terms of his probation include an anger management class, a domestic violence program and having no contact with Yolanda or her security detail.

THE FALLOUT

Gigi’s siblings, Bella and Anwar, have both unfollowed Zayn on social media. Bella (25) took to Instagram to share a cryptic message. “I can do nothing for you but work on myself. You can do nothing for me but work on yourself,” she posted.

Zayn’s sister, Waliyha Malik, also had something to say about the drama, taking aim at the Hadid clan on social media.

“Karma comes after everyone eventually," she wrote. "You can’t get away with screwing people over your whole life, I don’t care who you are."

THE SPLIT

Shortly after the family drama was made public, insiders confirmed that Zayn and Gigi (26) had split a few weeks ago, with a friend describing their relationship as “super toxic”.

“It’s much better that they have separated. Gigi and Zayn had a very destructive relationship when they were together,” the source said.

The young couple’s relationship, which started in 2015, has been on and off from the outset.

After calling it quits for the first time in March 2018, they were seen packing on the PDA in New York two months later.

In January 2019, an insider told Us Weekly that the model pulled the plug on their romance again because the I Don’t Wanna Live Forever singer had “a lot of his own issues that she couldn’t help him get through.”

“She cut herself off from all her friends every time they were together,” the source said at the time. “She focused all her time and energy on him, but it just got to be too much.”

More recently insiders say the model has felt stuck in the middle of the conflict between her mother and her baby daddy.

Apparently Zayn feels Yolanda does not have the same sense of privacy, which has led to the two clashing.

“Tension really started between Yolanda and Zayn last year when he suspected she was the one who leaked their pregnancy news in the first place,” the source claims.

“Gigi and Zayn didn't want to announce it publicly until after Gigi gave birth. With lockdown, it was the perfect time to give them that privacy they never would have had otherwise.

“They were so grateful for that privacy and they were very upset when it came out. Zayn is a very, very private person and while dating him, Gigi has become a lot more private too.”

Though Gigi feels like she's in the middle, "she's not on anyone's side," the insider says.

“That's her mom and the father of her child so it's a tough spot, she has loyalty to both. She’s tried and tried to mediate [Yolanda and Zayn’s] relationship but they just don't see eye to eye.

“She realised it was healthier for her to not be with Zayn right now. It was ultimately her who ended the relationship.”

WHAT'S NEXT?

A bitter legal battle between the estranged couple might be brewing, says a source close to Zayn’s camp.

“Gigi and he co-parent Khai, but any suggestion he has aggression issues or cannot be trusted to care for her, is something he will fight against with every ounce of his body.”

According to the insider, Gigi asked Zayn to seek help with anger management before they broke up.

“Gigi had urged Zayn to get therapy before they split and wanted him to deal with his issues.”

Although Gigi thinks he’s a wonderful father and wants to co-parent, she could be swayed by Yolanda’s sentiment towards Zayn.

“Her mother could potentially make legal moves within the court systems about custody,” the insider adds.

Meanwhile, things are not looking great for Zayn on the professional front either.

According to recent reports, his record label, RCA Records, has dropped him due to concerns about his lifestyle choices, including his cannabis habit.

“A lot of people have tried desperately to get Zayn’s life and career back on track, but nothing has worked," a music insider says.

“So many people who have worked with him have just given up. He’s almost impossible to control or guide.
