After a year of newlywedded bliss, singer Leona Lewis and her husband, Dennis Jauch, are ready to talk babies.

The 35-year-old recently shared in an interview that the couple were “figuring things out” when it came to having kids and are also open to the idea of adoption, after her own mother’s experience of growing up in a children’s home.

“My mum grew up in a children’s home. No one adopted her as a child, and I would very much like to adopt.”

After nine years together, the Bleeding Love songstress married her creative director husband in July last year at legendary musician Sting's sprawling 16th century estate in Tuscany, Italy.

“I do want children, but Dennis and I have also talked about adopting,” she says. “But I’m still figuring things out. If it was up to my husband, we would have had kids yesterday.”

Adoption is front and centre this week as World Adoption Day is celebrated on 9 November to “focus on raising awareness of children in foster care waiting to be adopted” according to the website awarenessdays.com.

In South Africa, an estimated 3,7 million children are awaiting permanent homes.

An average adoption in SA costs between R12 000 and R15 000 but in cases where parents can’t afford to pay, the service is rendered for free, says Katinka Pieterse, chairperson of the National Adoption Coalition of SA.

That’s because it’s not about making money, she says – it’s about matching up kids with the best possible parents.
