Western art owes much to the Ancient Greeks. The artworks and ideas of Ancient Greece were of such quality that it still has an influence on Western civilization.
The ancient Romans so admired Greek art that they copied much of it. In the Middle Ages, art was mostly based on Biblical themes meant to convey cautionary, moral messages. By then, art had lost the realism of Greek art – more about that later. Following the Middle Ages, the Renaissance period’s artists were inspired anew by the art of the Ancient Greeks, bringing about a “rebirth” in Western art.
