AI is stepping into the beauty industry.

The world's first artificial intelligence (AI) beauty pageant is set to take place next month with entirely fake models competing for their creators to win a total prize worth a whopping $20 000 (R360 000) prize package.

Created by the World Creator Awards (WAICA’s), this competition, dubbed the Miss AI pageant, isn't an ordinary beauty contest. Here AI models strut their stuff, not on a runway, but in the digital realm, where they're judged on their appearance, engagement, and a unique blend of beauty, tech savvy-ness, and social influence.

AI models will be judged on their appearance and social media presences, “as well as their beauty, tech, and clout for the chance to earn the Miss AI crown,” say the organisers.

The judging panel includes AI-generated influencers and models Aitana Lopez and Emily Pellegrini, pageantry historian Sally Ann Fawcett and marketing expert Andrew Bloch.

“As one of the world's only traditional pageantry historians it's really exciting to be involved in an awards which feels so futuristic,” says Sally Anne. “It's been a fast learning curve expanding my knowledge on AI creators, and it's quite incredible what is possible. Interestingly, there are so many parallels between real life pageantry contestants and AI creators, and how they engage with their audiences. I can't wait to assess the entrants alongside the other judges.”

An abundance of prizes are up for grabs. This includes a $5 000 (R90 000) cash prize that will be awarded to the creator of the best pixel-perfect model, not to mention promotional opportunities on the AI-platform Fanvue, and PR support valued at over $5 000.

The top ten finalists will be announced on Friday 10 May, with an online ceremony to follow at a later date.

Will Monanage, co-founder of virtual model content creator Fanvue, which is sponsoring the pageant, says, “The creator economy is an extremely exciting place to be in right now, and with the help of our platform, there’s been exponential growth in AI creators entering the space, growing their fanbases, and monetising content.

“We jumped at the chance to be the first ever partner of the Fanvue World AI Creator Awards, which recognises talent and tech - and will continue to raise standards within the industry. Miss AI is just one award as part of a program, and we share the vision for this to become the Oscars of the AI creator economy.”
