The last thing Amadeo Quirino expected to
hear was that his four-year-old son had been killed while playing outside with
his brother.
Angelo Quirino was playing with his brother Diego (8) when an iron gate fell on him, crushing him to death in Anzio, 61 km south west of Rome in Italy.
The boys and their younger sister had been on holiday with their mother Roberta at the time.
Amadeo and Roberta had moved to Manchester from Italy with their children three years ago, and Roberta and the children had returned to Italy to visit family.
Amadeo, who was not with the family, flew immediately to Italy when he received the devastating news.
Express UK reports Angelo suffered injuries to his head and collarbone, with paramedics attempting to resuscitate him for almost an hour.
According to the Mayor of Anzio Luciano Bruschini, the incident is being investigated.
“A sweet angel was here just to enjoy his time and suddenly a perfect vacation day has turned into tragedy,” Bruschini said, as quoted by The Telegraph.
“The city and all the population of Anzio is near to the family in this sorrowful moment.”
Family friend Imma Totaro, who spoke to the BBC, Angelo’s parents’ grief is “beyond words”.
The site also reports that an online appeal has been set up to help raise funds for the family.
