92-year-old doctor helps fight the coronavirus: 'Now is the call to action'

FOR decades his morning routine has been the same. Dr Perisamy Neelapithambaran Govender wakes up at 4am, puts on the news, showers, makes coffee, meditates for 30 minutes, watches the sun rise, then heads out to serve at his medical practice in Merebank near Durban.

But these aren’t normal times and since the outbreak of the coronavirus the 92-year-old had to add another habit to his daily routine: taking a truckload of meds to bolster his body: multivitamins, immune boosters, anti-inflammatory tablets, paracetamol and antipyretic medication to regulate his temperature – all so he can protect himself from contracting the deadly virus.

As an elderly person, he knows he’s at increased risk of falling prey to Covid-19 and that he needs to take extra precautions. Dr Govender takes this very seriously because, he says, his patients need him more than ever.
