A British woman and an Australian man have tragically died after falling from a 30m cliff at a seaside town in Portugal while apparently taking a selfie together.
A man in his forties and a woman in her thirties, who allegedly fell sometime between 1am and 6am, were found by a council worker on Tuesday 12 June in Lisbon, reports Daily Mail.
The head of rescue services, Rui Pereira da Terra, believes the pair were on a wall overlooking a popular tourist beach when they lost their balance and fell.
“Everything seems to indicate that the fall probably happened when they were trying to take a selfie,” Pereira da Terra said.
“It seems they dropped their mobile phone and fell down while leaning over to retrieve it.”
The Australian department of foreign affairs and trade confirmed that an Australian national had died while the British Foreign Office also confirmed the death of one of their citizens.
"The department of foreign affairs and trade is providing consular assistance in accordance with the Consular Services Charter to the family of an Australian who died in Portugal," the spokesperson said.
“The department has been in contact with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office regarding the other person who died in the incident."
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the two bodies have been taken to the National Legal Medicine Institute in Lisbon for autopsies to be conducted.
