She’s always been a law unto herself, has Sarah Ferguson – so it’s only fitting that when her daughter sent her mom a birthday message for her 61st birthday, she praised her one-of-a-kind character.

Princess Eugenie shared a series of sweet photographs of her "dear mumsy" to mark the occasion, including several taken in the garden of the family's Windsor home, Royal Lodge.

Although Fergie and Prince Andrew have been divorced since 1996, they remain on excellent terms and still live under one roof.

The princess – who is expecting Andrew and Fergie’s first grandchild – also included a recent mother-daughter selfie, as well as an adorable pic of Sarah with both Eugenie and her big sister, Beatrice (32), dressed in matching floral dresses, taken in 1992.

Eugenie (30) captioned the post: "Happy Birthday to my dear mumsy . . . You are one of a kind. There were too many pictures to choose from that show how completely unique you are.

"Royal fans also joined in on the birthday wishes, some taking the opportunity to congratulate the “granny-to-be”.

“Happy birthday! Here's hoping the red hair & fiery passion never fades,” one wrote.

Another well-wisher wrote, “OMG such a beautiful grandma.”

Meanwhile, Antonia Marshall, who has been working for the Duchess of York's office for the past 10 years, described Fergie as “one of the kindest and most caring people I know”.

“And makes me laugh every day,” she added.

Antonia’s post showed Fergie's playful side with a snap of the duchess waving at the camera as she peers over a pile of suitcases.

A second pictured showed a calm and relaxed Sarah stroking a horse’s face, wearing a black and green shawl over a black dress.

In her own birthday post, Fergie gave royal fans a glimpse of her beautiful dressing table as she thanked them for their birthday wishes in an Instagram video.

Wearing a vivid-green blouse, Sarah waved at the camera and said, "Hi, everybody, I just wanted to say a very quick thank you so much for all of my wonderful birthday messages – 61, still red-headed and not out!"

The duchess has been keeping young children entertained on her YouTube channel Storytime with Fergie and Friends, which she launched at the start of lockdown. To celebrate her birthday, Fergie announced she will be reading Duck and Goose: Goose Needs a Hug by Tad Hills, a story about listening to the needs of others and the importance of hugs.

Good-old Fergie.
