Her beloved fell pony being guided through the late summer sunshine at Windsor Castle, gun salutes and tolling bells, bouquets of flowers, handwritten messages, Union Jack flags, loving tributes – all this and more marked the first anniversary of the passing of a woman whose death forever changed the nation she ruled. 

Just two days after Queen Elizabeth’s last public event – greeting the UK’s new prime minister, Liz Truss – she was gone. And when her light went out, a little bit of specialness left the royal family too. 

The queen’s death was commemorated by the royal family and people around the globe.
