Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, says she is "full of admiration" for Catherine, Princess of Wales as she undergoes cancer treatment.

"All my thoughts and prayers are with the Princess of Wales as she starts her treatment,” Fergie wrote on Instagram, in the days after Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis to the world.

“I know she will be surrounded by the love of her family, and everyone is praying for the best outcome."

Fergie (64) revealed in January that she'd been diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, which was discovered following the removal of a cancerous mole during her earlier treatment for breast cancer.

“As someone who has faced their own battles with cancer in recent months, I am full of admiration for the way she has spoken publicly about her diagnosis and know it will do a tremendous amount of good to raise awareness."

The duchess' post comes just days after King Charles - who's also been diagnosed with cancer - commended his daughter-in-law for speaking out about her diagnosis. "I am so proud of Catherine for her courage," he said.

Fergie said she hoped the princess would be given the "time, space and privacy to heal".

Kate revealed in a video statement on Friday that she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy after her cancer diagnosis. Details of the cancer have not been made public, but the palace says it's confident the princess will make a full recovery.

Fergie's daughter, Princess Beatrice, has filled the gap left by Kate's absence by representing the royals at several charitable events recently.

“Beatrice stepped up to represent the royal family at a mental health week event recently which is an event Kate would have attended,” a source said.

She’s also stood in for the royals at formal events like the Cheltenham Festival and others, a clear indication that she’s assuming greater royal responsibilities.

King Charles and Prince William have both commended the princess' efforts.

“Both the King and William have seen how well Beatrice has stepped up in recent weeks and that’s why they're happy to push her to the front to represent the family in public,” the source added.
