Best female fictional characters

accreditation
Fictional heroines.

They come in all shapes and sizes and we love them for so many different reasons.

From the bold, in-your-face, ass-kicking fighter, to the quietly courageous protagonist who, through a steady amount of perseverance and determination, leaves her indelible mark forever imprinted in our hearts - these heroines not only inspire us, but also make us feel  as if we've found kindred spirits in them.

Out of curiosity, we asked you to tell us about some of the female protagonists that have left a lasting impression on you. Here's what you had to say.

Eve Dallas (The In Death series by JD Robb)  She is awesome, strong, opinionated, independent and kicks some serious backside too.
Gillian

Elizabeth Bennet.  Because, along  with a bunch of fabulous sisters, she really is one of the first feminist characters in literature.
Kelly

Katniss Everdeen. She's fearless, she takes the actions that even men are afraid to take, sees through people's agenda's and loves deeply, even though she can't choose.  She's compassionate, rebellious and ruthless, but at the same time stands up for what she believes in.
Lisa

My favourite female character is Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, because she is smart and observant, yet self-aware enough to know how people perceive her and use that for her own ends.

One of my other favourites is Lucy Eyelesbarrow, a character in "4:50 from Paddington" because she is able to go against the tide, exploit a gap in the market, make a fortune and still maintain her independence.
Deidre

Celie from The Color Purple. She is a funny, sweet character who grows into a mature, resilient woman who has subtle successes in her life journey. In spite of her hardships and downfalls, she manages to rise up and always hold her head high. hard not to admire a character liek that.
Thamaine

Janie Crawford(Their eyes were watching God) She shows strength to handle whatever life throws at her and upholds her dignity through it all. She challenged conventions and embarked on journeys leading to self realisation.  Brilliant and something I aspire to.
Desiree

Catherine from Wuthering Heights. She has so much passion, strength, power and love!
Lilian

Bridget Jones - because she is so what you NOT expect from the 'female lead' - She's clumsy, overweight, a little crazy, and ordinary
Izette
