Something to Hide by Deborah Moggach (first published in 2015 by Penguin Random House)

Petra is living out her golden years alone in London. Her children and grandchildren are scattered about the world, and her previous romantic relationships have been unsuccessful.

Yearning for company, Petra is revived by the visit of Jeremy, husband to her friend, Bev, and long-time acquaintance. Jeremy has travelled to the UK for business, and will be in London for a few days before returning to his wife and home in West Africa.

While he is in the country, Petra dutifully entertains him and takes him out, enjoying the respite from her solitary life. Their shared history means that their relationship has a certain comfort; a nostalgia. This soon turns to something more, when both begin to fall in love.

Lorrie, a Texas housewife to an army husband, has been victim to internet fraud, and watched her life savings disappear. In a desperate attempt to recover the loss without her husband’s knowledge, Lorrie must resort to the biggest deception of her life.

Li-Jing has married a powerful jet setter businessman in Beijing, and the only thing missing from her life is a child. However, when it is discovered that she cannot have children, she and her husband must decide how to go about growing their family. All the while, Li-Jing wonders what exactly her husband does in Africa.

A delightful, easy read which illustrates the tangled lives of people across the globe, Something to Hide is an excellent depiction of the weight of secrets. The notion of trust is truly tested, as each character is faced with a deception that could shake the very foundations of their belief systems.

Moggach uses prose which is easy to follow and imagery, which is simple yet pleasing. Something to Hide is an ideal summer read – carefully interspersed with intrigue and suspense, this is a novel which will make the reader appreciate honest relationships. Giving much food for thought, Something to Hide is ideal book club material.
