The Improbability of Love by Hannah Rothschild (first published in 2015 by Bloomsbury UK publishers)

After years collecting dust in a pawn shop, the painting waits to hear its fate as the movers and shakers in the art world gather at an auction that threatens to blow open secrets that have been hidden for decades.

Meanwhile Annie McDee has been finding her way after a big break-up, tentatively pursuing her dream of becoming a creative chef.

Through chance meetings and coincidence, she is brought into conflict with some of the more dangerous dealers in the art world.

Unaware that she has unearthed an artistic treasure, Annie is more concerned with her hiccupping love life and grabbing every opportunity to show off her skill as a chef.

The events she caters give the author an opportunity for culinary flights of fantasy to tantalise and amuse the reader, while imparting a wealth of research into the history of feasting.

Following Annie’s progress from lonely heart to creative powerhouse, this is also very much the story of a work of art and its hundreds of years being passed from one illustrious owner to the other.

As the painting tells its story, a history unfolds which gives rich background and a better understanding of why some artworks are held to be of unimaginable value.

Writer Hannah Rothschild weaves together a wealth of research and background with her down-to-earth story of a woman whose life has been unexpectedly derailed, trying to find a meaningful life for herself and her alcoholic mother. The result is an interesting, informative and enjoyable read.
