Caine prize winner confirmed for Open Book Festival

Nigerian Tope Folarin, just won the fourteenth Caine Prize for African Writing for his short story, ‘Miracle’.

Tope is the first writer based outside Africa to win the £10,000 prize. He was born and raised in the US, spent a year in Nigeria and six months in Cape Town, but has mostly lived in the UK and US, and is now based in Washington DC.

"I'm elated. I'm a writer situated in the Nigerian disapora, and the Caine prize means a lot – it feels like I'm connected to a long tradition of African writers. The Caine prize is broadening its definition and scope. I consider myself Nigerian and American; both identities are integral to who I am. To win … feels like a seal of approval," Tope said.

He confirmed his attendance at the third edition of Open Book earlier this week, saying, ‘I'm incredibly excited to be participating in the Open Book Festival this year. I've been a fan of the festival – and many of the authors who will be present – for quite a while.’

Lizzy Attree speaking on behalf of the Caine Prize said, "This is the third year that we have worked with the Open Book Festival to bring the Caine Prize winner to South Africa. It's always a pleasure to be in Cape Town but the partnership also signals our intention to support the presence of Caine Prize writers on the continent."

‘We are delighted that Tope is able to join us for the festival this year. His voice will add significantly to what is set to be a powerful Open Book programme this year. As in previous years, there is a strong contingent of African writers at Open Book this year, and Tope Folarin joins the likes of NoViolet Bulawayo, Mukoma wa Ngugi and Teju Cole.’ said Frankie Murrey, Open Book Festival Coordinator.
