Edgars' "apology" over sale scandal contradicts earlier statement

accreditation

Recently, a social media frenzy ensued following reports that Edgars customers were paying inflamed prices for goods meant to be on sale. Once the sale price tag was pulled a way, customers discovered that they were being taken for a ride.

Readers and customers are not stupid. And yes, we will hold you accountable if you choose to lie to us. Hell hath no fury like a customer scorned.

We recently reported on an Edgars sales scandal that saw readers sharing pictures on Twitter and Facebook of "sale" items that cost more on sale than its original price.

EWN reported that one woman was even reprimanded by a security guard in store when she tried to check the original price of the sale item.

After this scandal started to build momentum on social media, we asked Edgars to respond to the above allegations in an attempt to find out why sales items were marked up instead of down. Edgars Marketing Executive, Belinda Godfrey, made the following statement:

"With the recent start of Edgars’ new fiscal year, we as a retailer have gone through selected price increases due to rising inflation and costs. Soon after this increase we entered into our end of season sale, therefore the seeming increase followed by a mark-down is purely coincidental.  We understand that this has caused some confusion and for this reason we will review our process of communicating prices in the future."

Now, after much anger and hundreds of comments and complaints on social media made by customers, Edgars finally apologised, according to EWN.

The fashion retailer apparently said their pricing system underwent an unforeseen human/system error and that some of the items were incorrectly set at a much higher price point. For example setting a price at R1,999.95 instead of R1,099.95. Apparently, head office has dealt with these "errors" and there should be no more such hiccups.

A little too late? Was this a sincere apology? We think not. One mistake, maybe yes, but so many? Impossible. Egg, face, yes.
