Going Postal by Terry Pratchett (Corgi Books)
Choosing my first e-Book wasn’t easy, as I am rather partial to paper, so I decided to go with a read I knew would clip along well... a Terry Pratchett.
This is a great book, even if it is Death-free. Our (anti) hero, the cannily named Moist van Lipwig, falls straight through a hangman’s trapdoor into the job of Postmaster General, such as could only be possible under Ank-Morpork’s Patrician rule.
Van Lipwig, like many of Prachett’s characters, is the very definition of wiley. He takes one look at the challenge sets before him and first runs quite in the opposite direction.
It is only after his Golem “bodyguard” makes it clear that only one of the two options before him involve the luxury of breathing, that our hero turns the mastery of his confidence trickster self onto the problem at hand.
How to fix the Post Office, which – on closer inspection – isn’t covered in pigeon droppings but is literally CAKED in old, undelivered mail? How does Moist compete against the money-grabbing and decidedly shady Grand Trunk clacks communication monopoly? And how could he possibly secure a girlfriend with such a silly name?
If you like Pratchett, you’ll love Going Postal. It also has a very funny bit about stamps in it.
