Many fashion authorities believe that the Oscars offers the best of red carpet fashion. Others – the edgier ones – think that the annual Met Gala is the benchmark of red carpet fashion. I disagree with all of them. I think that the two weeks of film festival held every year in May in Cannes is hands-down the red carpet winning occasion.
First of all it lasts for two whole weeks of day and night photo calls, premiers and parties. That’s a lot of non-stop fashion.
Second it happens to coincide with the start of summer season in the northern hemisphere so everything is brand new – we’ve haven’t seen these looks since the runways.
Third, there are red carpet events morning, noon and night, so the glamour we see has inspiration for all our lifestyle occasions. I love the summery day looks for photo calls just as much as the ball gowns at the evening premiers.
And fourth, and most importantly, the mood is as glitzy and glamorous as it is possible to be. Wear couture to brunch? No problem in Cannes. This is the one place in the world that you could never be over dressed.
Every year we, the fashion commentators, crown a Queen of Cannes when it comes to style. In 2012 it was Diane Kruger and it cemented a couple of huge endorsement deals and a new TV show for her. Last year it was Nicole Kidman, and she signed as the face of Jimmy Choo immediately after.
This year, Cate Blanchett and Blake Lively are currently battling it out as the uber style stars of the festival. Both have films out, both are bringing it on the red carpet like never before. Blake has her husband, Ryan Reynolds – who also has a film premiering there – as an advantage. Cate is flawless. The battle is intense.
Other pretenders to the fashion crown this year include Jennifer Lawrence, who is dishing the Dior in professional quantities. Naomi Watts is the fragile beauty in Marchesa. Freida Pinto brings her quiet beauty to contemporary fashion. And Jane Fonda is always sensational in glitzy, figure-hugging gowns that defy her age and show that style lasts all your life.
