Crawford Hunt is due in court. He may be a Texas Ranger, but this case is personal. On this day, it will be decided if he wins custody of his daughter. Following the death of his wife and his out of control spiral into grief and depression, Hunt is desperate to raise his daughter.
However, just before the verdict can be delivered, a gun man bursts in the courtroom, wreaking havoc and killing the bailiff. Hunt instinctively protects Judge Holly Spencer, the apparent target of the attack.
Following the incident and with the verdict of his custody hearing undelivered, Hunt is pulled in to help the local police investigate the crime, and see just who has a vendetta against Holly Spencer. Holly seems an unlikely target with no enemies to speak of, further complicating the case. At the same time, Hunt must deal with his own demons and the consequences of his past.
As the investigation progresses, Holly must question her faith in the law and her morals, while Hunt stubbornly disregards both in an attempt to win back his daughter. Together, he and Holly form an unlikely pair, yet they are the very duo that must figure out that there was more to the apparent attempt on Holly’s life than everyone initially thought. The modus operandi is shocking, and time is running out for all involved.
Friction is an easy read which is somewhat formulaic and predictable, yet entertaining nonetheless. The story follows a path not unlike many cheesy Western films, complete with heroics and romance, a dash of family drama and dark secrets. Part mom porn and part whodunit, Friction is an adventure throughout, which is undeniably fun and easy-going. The novel serves as a welcome break from reality; not to be taken too seriously.
