Fay Merryweather runs a cake shop from her stunning garden. She makes delicious cakes and treats and runs her business during the day while looking after her bedridden mother every moment she gets.
Edie, her younger sister uses her and only contacts her when she needs something. Anthony her unobservant partner takes her for granted but they plod along as they have done for years.
We soon learn she has a longing to fix up her father’s narrowboat and use it along the canal. Instead the boat sits and Fay stores cakes in it as she shelves her dream of travelling.
Her assistant Lija is a humorous character with a big heart but is able to see how others take advantage of Fay’s endless patience and good nature.
Then a stranger arrives one morning and Fay is forced to question her choices and decisions. For the first time she realises she doesn’t have to continue on a path others expect her to travel.
The book is an easy read, with a surprising turn, which I didn’t expect in the least. I found the way some of the characters treated Fay to be a bit trying at times. Readers might agree that Fay put others before herself for far too long and even after getting the shock of her life, she is unselfish.
The cakes described in the book made me want to visit a gorgeous cake shop like this one and order a high tea! It is a sweet (no pun intended) read.
