This book scared the hell out of me!

accreditation
Letter one:

I am a horror fanatic, I love reading horror stories. I quite enjoyed Dean Koontz, my favourite book is Odd Thomas. The end really caught me by surprise in a freaky scary manner. It is definitely one of the scarier books that I have read in a long time. - Andrea

Letter two:

Scariest book I’ve ever read? That’s easy: Stephen King’s The Shining.

Let me first say that I have always preferred to read a book before watching the movie and I followed the same route here. I could not read this book at night, it scared the heebie jeebies out of me.

Mr. King has the ability to get inside your head and freak you out. I mean The Shining is basically about a father who gets cabin fever in the huge hotel he's maintaining for the winter and he goes on a rampage.

I was so scared that when I was alone and reading this book, it was hard for me to go on a bathroom break without checking around every corner that there was no one there to attack me.

And then there's Stephen King’s Pet Cemetery.

Another great book by Stephen King and this one, similar to The Shining, also scared the shivers out of me. If you have pets then this book will affect you. Imagine bringing back a beloved pet who has passed on, but they never come back quite the way they used to be. It gets worse... what happens when you want to bring a human back?

I think the thing that scared me the most was how Mr. King manages to get into your head. You get jumpy for no reason, agitated and anxious… it’s enough to scare the hell out of anyone.

But that’s exactly the type of books that I love! - Niecole

Letter three:

I'm not sure if it was an impressionable time in my life (young and melancholic) or a general state of mind. In those years, it was not just about us, we still had to contend with the unnatural society of apartheid, which we all wanted to heal, cure and end so badly.

We had dreams of becoming air hostesses, game wardens or sea captains, which was exactly what they were - dreams. So we sought refuge in books and herein I discovered the beautifully written short stories of Edgar Allen Poe.

I loved the deft way he wove his story in a beautiful prose which fascinated and horrified me at the same time. His tales were tall - very tall - but they struck you with their convoluted descriptions of torture and horror.

No lover of Dean R. Koontz and all the others, but having read both him and Stephen King, I have to admit that Edgar Allen Poe's short stories cured me of real horror for life! - Karima

Letter four:

I don't scare easily and I thrive on reading thrillers of all ilk, but I must honestly say that the one book that has stayed with me (since I had to read it as a prescribed book many, many moons ago) was The Lord of the Flies by William Golding. - Erika

Letter five:

The scariest book I have ever read is IT by Stephen King. IT centers around a clown, Pennywise, who lives in the sewers and uses his appearance to draw children. He then shapeshifts into a form that will induce fear because he feeds off of fear. On many occasions he hurts the children, either leaving them to die or devouring them. - Ada*
