Ncumisa Duma, aka Mimi, of Urban Mimz has firmly established herself as one of the most sought- after hairstylists. She’s behind some of the trending looks rocked by social media influencer Kwena Baloyi. Mimi is now a household name; a hair guru who’s popular for her eccentric natural hair creations. She’s managed to weave African tales through hair.

We asked Mimi to create four dynamic looks – she knocked them out the park! The stylist showed off her skill using beads, shells and wool, hair accessories as old as our continent itself.

To explain how she comes up with her head-turning looks, she says: “I draw inspiration from everyday people, their stories and strengths, my own memories of my granny doing my hair or how our grandmothers used to do their own hair. So I just make it come to life the way I see it in my head.”  Mimi is self-taught when it comes to African hair textures and new ways to showcase them.

For further inspiration, the hair guru revisits her theatre background to find her voice in the rising popularity of Afrofuturism – a futuristic trend  that combines elements of black history and culture.
