In 2014, we saw the meteoric rise of, predominantly, pink hair. Peachy pink, dusty pink and candyfloss hues were spotted everywhere. We pinned hair looks on Pinterest and douple-tapped colourful hair pictures on Instagram.
And now in 2018 there is an uprise in cool hair hues. And we kind of want in.
But getting there, ain't no easy feat. Getting your hair to be recognised 'as hair' after putting it through the strenuous process of being coloured that is and to avoid people looking at you like this...
Here's how to ensure you don't do too much damage to your natural hair:

Bright hues
The trending colours of 2018 are definitely violet, light browns, blush pink, and shades of blues.
A hair expert at Frika hair gave us some pointers:
"The South African consumer is very conservative when it comes to colour. However, social media and influencers have played a big role in driving awareness of colour and the desire to explore and to be more adventurous. One thing that we notice though is that they tend to try out colour in ombres as it must blend with the natural hair colour."
The most important thing to consider when going bright...
"If you are planning to colour your natural hair, try a wig in the same shade that you want, to ensure that the colour works perfectly with your complexion. Opt for a wig versus putting your hair through the trauma of bleaching it."
Aftercare
It is important to make sure that you stick to your hair care routine after colouring as the hair is very fragile. Always add moisture. Moisture seal-in products as well as shampoos won't strip out the colour or cause it to fade too quickly.
Coily hair
Ruby red, chestnut blonde, light brown, and auburn are trending for spring.
"If the hair is not chemically treated, it tends to take in more product than treated hair. Because of the work that goes into getting the colour, it is advisable to get professional help," says Frika.

Aftercare
It's crucial to use aftercare products that do not strip the colour away and can still give you maximum moisturisation. Washing with a a recommended shampoo and conditioner by your stylist at least once a week, using cream-based products, oils and go for regular trims and treatments. Look for curl defining products with conditioning extracts.

Oil your hair especially in winter as the scalp tends to get very dry.
Advantages and disadvantages
Convenience, ease of maintenance, and it's a great style if you want to try different colours - from bright to muted as there is so little hair to think about in terms of maintenance.
On the flip side, there is a lack of versatility. But hey, hair grows back.
Curly tresses
The biggest challenges women face when it comes to curly natural hair is tangling, frizziness, drying, bristling and breakage.
To ensure optimal hair health after colouring especially, the correct shampoo, conditioner and moisture seal-in products should be used. Always ask your stylist for recommendations.
The biggest mistakes women with this type of hair make, according to Frika, is using the wrong products.
"Because of the different curl patterns, products that work for one might not be so effective on another."
