We met up with the Brow Guru Bridgette Ramotsepe from iBrowz Brow Bar to get the low down on microblading.

Microblading is a semi-permanent solution for people struggling to grow hair around their brow area, including those suffering from cancer and alopecia. With 10 years experience in the industry, Bridgette prides herself on giving her clients the confidence they never had before. She adds that this has become a popular beauty trend not only among women but some men too.

The process starts with a brow specialist assessing your personality to determine whether to give you exaggerated or natural eyebrows. She then follows with waxing and measuring your brows to the correct length for your face. Bridgette adds that by now, most of her clients are nervous for what’s to come. She applies a generous amount of numbing solution around the brow area and leaves it on for 15-20 minutes to make the pain a bit bearable.

To get my mind off the blades she’s lining up on her work station, I ask her how much the procedure costs and like many brow studios, the average price is set just over R2 000, that includes the mandatory visit six weeks after your first appointment.

Once the eyebrow area was numb, she started the needling process. She gently inserted the pigment with light strokes, creating superficial lines in the skin that resembles hair and removed the excess with a wipe. The same procedure is applied to the other brow and just like that, I had more visible brows.

Before leaving, Bridgette advised that the bladed area should be kept away from water for the first five days and supplied me with a vitamin E serum to apply over the brows twice a day. The serum helps with reducing the itchiness, dryness and flakiness.

“It’s very important that clients follow instructions given by their brow specialists, to see great results from the blading,” Bridgette stresses.

You get to measure the healing process at the follow-up appointment and can see if the pigment has faded or not and do the necessary touch-ups.

5 Facts about Microblading:

  •    It lasts up to 2 years (depending on the number of facials and peels you get done in that period)
  •    The pigment is adjustable to your preference
  •    You might swell and bleed slightly, {depending on your skin}
  •    There could be a lot of fading, but that’s part of the healing process.
  •    There are no major side effects if the Microblading is done professionally.
