Does the cost of beauty products matter more to you than whether they work or not?

We recently ran a skin survey by Clarins Bright Plus in which we asked our users what their biggest concern was when it came to buying products to treat specific skin problems. These are some of the findings...

When it comes to buying beauty and skincare products the usual assumption is that the more pricey it is, the more likely it is that it will work better and even faster. Otherwise why else would it cost so much?

Our minds probably associate the luxurious packaging of high-end products with an effectiveness that will leave our faces glowing in a manner reminiscent of the packaging.

And although luxe skincare products get the job done, it doesn't necessarily mean that cheaper products are inferior.

For instance I don't usually pay more than R150 per product that forms part of my skincare routine. And besides oiliness, I don't really have any dire concerns about my skin.

I could just be genetically lucky or it could be the fact that the affordable brand I'm loyal to is maintaining my skin's needs quite well.

However, many women have still not yet found the perfect serum, toner or skin brightening cream.

I mention these three product options in particular because the most prevalent skin concerns for South African women are uneven skin tone and dark spots and yet, just a little over 50% of them are using something to try correct the problem.

Consumers want proven solutions to their skin concerns above everything else.

The other forty-odd percent can probably be attributed to the fact that we don't always know what exactly to buy to treat certain skin conditions.

You want to treat acne scars, but that coconut oil in your cupboard is just not cutting it - instead, it's just blocking your pores and now you need real solutions.

Not knowing what to buy is actually the second biggest concern for women in the Western Cape, while our Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal users seem to know what they want.

It therefore comes as no surprise that our users prioritise the effectiveness of a beauty product more than how the purchase will affect their wallet.

And while some responses revealed that the cost is something people do take into consideration, the overall result revealed that consumers want proven solutions to their skin concerns above everything else.

Of course at the end of the day what really determines whether we stick with a particular product or not is how all those chemical formulas on the back of the alluring packaging react with our skin.
