The next Naomi Campbell? Anok Yai has arrived

accreditation

She made history this year when she became the first black model to open the runway for Prada at Milan Fashion Week in 20 years.

The first to do so in the Italian fashion brand's history was the iconic Naomi Campbell herself.

Queen.

Now she has been selected to be Estée Lauder’s newest global spokesmodel.

The 20-year-old model, now based in the U.S. is Egyptian born, and of Somalian decent.

But onto the world of beauty campaigning. Now ready to take the reigns, Anok will join other black models including Joan Smalls and Liya Kebede who've also fronted Estée Lauder beauty ads in years past. Dishearteningly, Naomi Campbell has never fronted a beauty campaign.

Imagine.

But how much money are we talking here?

Neal Vincent, CEO of Base Model Agency gave us a breakdown, and compared a model like Anok's potential earnings to local ones. But first he says, "... it all depends. There are many factors that determine your 'value' in the world of modelling."

  • Local runway = Between R1 200 – R2 000 per show.
  • International runway = 500 – 10 000 euros (R7 000 - R150 000), depending on calibre of model.
  • Local campaigns, for example something like MRP, would be approximately, R6 000 - 10 000 per day.
  • International campaigns (fashion and beauty) can go for up to anything above R100 000, again depending on the calibre of model.

She has covered many magazines, and has been a Prada darling for a while now, being featured in their eyewear and fashion ads in the past year.

Estée Lauder's new brand amabassador has climbed up the ranks of modelling and is sure to start making the big bucks, so to speak.

Earlier this year, Adut Akech Bior, the Sudanese-Australian model, made history at Paris Fashion Week for being the second black woman to close a Chanel show. So we are not only slowly starting to see a larger representation of black models in fashion and beauty campaigns, but also African models. This year our very own beauty, and Gert-Johan Coetzee muse Thando Hopa was also featured in the Pirelli Calendar.
