Toner: why you need to start using it

accreditation
Summer is here, which means the warmer it gets the more our skin tends to break and go dry. A toner not only removes dirt from pores, but it also moisturises and hydrates your skin by balancing the PH levels in your skin.

A recent African Extracts skin survey showed that out of over 1000 SA women questioned, only 26.4% of said that they use toner religiously.

Some say that they’re not necessary, but they can be a great addition to your beauty regime, especially for those who have oily skin or suffer from acne.

They are the gentlest way to hydrate your skin, minimise breakouts and blackheads. Skipping the toner step may be stealing your opportunity to get youthful, clearer and healthier skin.

3 types of toners:

1.    Water-based toners

These are ideal for those with dry and sensitive skin. According to Live Strong, water-based toners focus on restoring the skins PH levels and conditioning the skin. This is the more preferred choice when it comes to using toners, as it’s great at removing impurities.

2.    Alcohol-based toners

These toners especially help those who suffer from acne. However, Paula’s Choice Skincare says that these toners should always be avoided, because they may cause free-radical damage and irritation to your skin. It is believed that it harms your skin’s ability to repair itself and to produce healthy collagen.

3.    Water and glycerine toners

This toner helps remove excess oil and keeps your pores clean. It’s preferred for oily and acne-prone skin. These toners are usually scented with various extracts and are often labelled as fresheners and clarifiers. Depending on your skin type, certain toners can cause irritation and may potentially give you an allergic reaction.

You know you are using the wrong toner when…

When your skin appears oilier, there is overall redness, dry flaky skin or long-lasting red marks – then it’s time to abandon.
