Ren Yugi (now 27) was celebrating her 25th birthday on 1 July 2015 when she registered with the China Marrow Donor Program.
Months became years and Ren heard nothing more from the programme. That is, until recently.
While planning her wedding, she received a call from the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC), telling her a patient, who was a tissue match, needed a donation.
An elated Ren, who’s from the city of Langfang in the northern province of Hebei, agreed without hesitation.
To ensure she was in tiptop shape ahead of the operation, Ren started running 4km every day.
With the support of her fiancé and family, the bride-to-be postponed her wedding and focused all her energy on preparing for the surgery, in which some of her bone marrow was to be removed.
The op to remove haematopoietic stem cells from Ren was successful. The stem cells were used to save the life of the patient, who suffers from haemopathy, a disorder of the blood.
Ren is only the 14th bone marrow donor in Langfang. She’s reportedly recovering well from the operation and is once again focusing on her upcoming wedding though it’s unclear when it will take place.
