Local wedding cake businesses you should follow on Instagram right now

accreditation

There are many things to love about wedding, but one of the highlights for me is always seeing the beautifully crafted and creative cakes. Some people say the wedding dress maketh the wedding, but I think the cake does.

I mean, you can’t eat the wedding dress after all. Unless it’s a wedding dress cake, in which case… but I digress.

Point is that you’re getting married and you're probably thinking about a cake at your wedding. Or not.

Sugar ‘n Ice

Not only does this Randburg-based business make some of the most beautiful contemporary and traditional wedding cakes, but they also offer classes in cake decorating.

Their displays are absolutely amazing and their cakes come in a variety of wonderfully traditional and exotic flavours which include but aren’t limited to Chocolate Ganache, Bar One Caramel, French Vanilla and Italian Sponge.

Don’t have a sweet tooth? They also offer cheese displays.

We decided to get in touch with the team and asked them about the one type of cake they wished more brides-to-be would take a chance on.

Kate, founder of Sugar ‘n Ice tells us that she wishes that clients could take a more practical look when they choose a cake - so that it can be more accessible for the guests.

I love the donut cakes. They are a huge novelty at the moment and is a great idea to serve with coffee later in the evening.

Honey Bee Baker

So many inspiring cake businesses to follow and drool over. From contemporary to naked wedding cakes with a fruity twist, couples can either choose fuss-free cakes available in their online store catalogue.

We’re also excited to see that they offer mirror cakes, brownies and decadent macarons) or order custom-made cakes designed to your specification.

We reached out and couldn’t resist enquiring about the mirror cakes. I mean, just how do they get the aesthetic of the cake to look that shiny and flawless?

It’s all about hard work, temperature and timing, says Melissa, owner of Honey Bee Baker.

Temperature and timing is the most important in getting a flawless mirror cake finish. If you get that right, it really is not that hard. But the many different elements and textures, takes a lot of preparation, so be prepared to spend quite some time in the kitchen to get it just right.

Cape Town

Florentines

Based in Constantia, this exquisite bakery’s portfolio and offering is diverse as it is unique. Not limited to weddings alone, Florentines also specialise in creating handcrafted wedding toppers.

Christa, the genius pastry chef behind Florentines, gives us a peek into what makes her wedding cakes so unique:

As with fashion there are trends and designs that change year to year. I have never made a cake that is exactly the same, some designs are the same or similar but colour or flowers change the look. I try incorporate the clients colours and personality into the cake design.

Charly’s Bakery

Jacqui and Alexandra give us a glimpse into their wildly successful business:

We specialise in wicked chocolate wedding cake, which is a dense, moist, brownie-style chocolate cake, with the option to get a top tier or middle tier spiced carrot cake, or vanilla pound cake.

And for those worried about dietry requirements? There's a little something for you too.

Jacqui adds,

We have brought out the most amazing range of vegan cakes and cupcakes which are iced in a combination of our delicious vegan chocolate ganache and vegan "butter" cream icing. We've also just developed a speciality range of gluten free cupcakes decorated with everything from edible succulents to unicorns, so there's something for everyone.

She hilariously goes on to add that Charly's Bakery "is also known as the Capital of lastminute.com as many laid back Capetonians call us daily for emergency cakes that can be personalised in store with 15-30mins available."

Check out what they have on offer from their website.

Wades cakes

While there are a range of cakes and flavours to choose from, if you’re not big on the individual cakes, they also offer beautiful Croquembouche and Macaroon Towers – all stacked to perfection - and savoury cheese tables.

We asked what advice he has for couples who want a beautiful cake but are constrained by their budget:

"If couple faces tight budget for their wedding when it comes to the wedding cake

We suggest that part of the budget from menu be allocated to the cake as a dessert option.

The Cake Baker

Founded in 2010 by Sasha Naidoo, from baby, birthday and celebration cakes to custom wedding cakes and dessert tables, you definitely won’t lack options.

Sasha tells us a little about the growing trend of people opting for candy buffet and dessert tables.

There's definitely a shift in wedding cake and candy buffet trends and I think it stems from the popularity of harvest tables and grazing stations at weddings. Weddings have become such relaxed, chilled celebrations with the focus being variety, in terms of food and drinks.
