British royalty have always seemed to be the most high profile in terms of clout and media presence, but that doesn’t mean that lesser known royals haven’t thrown extravagantly beautiful weddings – both when it comes to the ceremony and fashion-wise.
We highlight some of our favourite royal dresses from over the years:
Princess Lalla Salma
Lalla wed King Mohammed VI of Morocco, 21 March 2002. Before she became a princess, she was a computer expert and qualified engineer from a middle-class family in the ancient city of Fez.
Princess Lalla was dressed in a traditional Moroccan wedding gown, which included donning a thick veil for a portion of the ceremonies. She also wore diamond tiara.
Queen Sylvia Nagginda
Sylvia married King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II in 1999. She was not born into royalty and lived in the USA, working as a World Bank employee, where she met King Ronald. The couple got married at St. Paul's Cathedral on Namirembe Hill.
She wore a cream short-sleeved gown embellished with gold and a tiara.
Princess Charlene of Monaco
Our very own Charlene Wittstock’s married Prince Albert of Monaco in a lavish Catholic ceremony, which saw a retinue of celebrities, fashion designers and royalty from all over Europe in attendance.
The wedding took place over the course of two days (1 and 2 July 2011) – a civil ceremony followed by the religious ceremony – and saw Charlene in a beautiful, off-the-shoulder gown designed by Giorgio Armani.
Princess Dayangku Sarah
Sarah wore a diamond encrusted tiara and her dress was interwoven with gold threading. And get this – her bouquet wasn’t an arrangement of flowers, it was made from gold and diamonds.
Apparently flowers are for peasants.
Princess Diana
We’d be remiss not to include one of the most iconic royal wedding dresses of our time.
According to Cosmopolitan.com, the late Princess Diana’s dress was designed by husband and wife duo, Elizabeth and David Emanuel and featured 10 000 pearls.

Queen Letizia Ortiz
She’s a former journalist who wed into Spanish royalty and became a queen when she wed King Felipe VI in a beautiful ceremony which took place in May of 2004.
Princess Victoria of Sweden
She donned a beautiful off-the-shoulder wedding dress with a striking and show-stopping golden tiara.
According to The Telegraph, the couple had to endure Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf’s disapproval, but weathered the storm and wed in a ceremony which took place in June 2010.
Princess Salwa - Kendra Spears
American model Kendra Spears married Prince Rahim, eldest son of the Aga Khan in Lake Genveva, Switzerland.
Princess Mary Donaldson
Crown Prince Frederik and Australia-born Crown Princess Mary meet at a pub, the Slip Inn in Sydney, where Frederik was relaxing with the Danish sailing team in 2000. The two then began their long distance romance until the Crown Princess relocated to Denmark in 2001.
According to us.hellomagazine.com the Crown Princess wore a simple ivory gown by Danish fashion designer Uffe Frank. The dress was made of duchesse satin and featured a six metre train.
Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton
Our list wouldn’t be complete without the couple who, we think, made the British monarchy popular again. .
The duchess wore a stunning V-neck Alexander McQueen gown, with lace appliqué floral detail, making it one of our all time favourite gowns.
