Werner Niemann, a 24-year-old from Pretoria, has proposed to his girlfriend, Minette du Plessis (also 24), on an airplane.

Werner tells YOU he carefully planned how he’d propose to Minette.

“I told her we were going to a Springbok rugby match in Bloemfontein. We were visiting my parents in Bloemhof for the weekend,” he said.

He also made sure they’d be suitably attired for the important occasion, telling Minette “we’ll be sitting in our own private box”.

Initially he wanted to propose to her in a hot-air balloon, Werner says, “but I have a terrible fear of heights”.

Then a new idea took shape in his head. His father owns a brickworks company and a friend of his dad has an aeroplane. “So, I got the idea to ask her to marry me up in the sky,” he says.

On the Saturday morning before the couple were due to take off, Werner and his dad used bricks to write “marry me?” on the ground.

“As we flew over Bloemhof the plane made a wide circle and Minette spotted the pink bricks on the ground,” Werner recalls. “She was so surprised that the first thing she said was, ‘Really? With me?’”

Pictures show Minette wiping away tears of joy.

“I’d caught her off-guard but I know we’re meant for each other,” Werner adds.

After their exciting flip the couple had a romantic picnic – the rugby match long forgotten.

They plan to tie the knot in March next year in Potchefstroom, where they first met and are studying at university.
