Book review: Anna and Theo by Amanda Prowse

accreditation

Anna and Theo by Amanda Prowse (first published in 2018 by Head of Zeus)

The clever premise of these twin novels is the undeniable fact that in a love story there can be no one truth.

Each partner brings their own upbringing, history, flaws and hopes to the connection. And when it works, it’s special and lasting.

Anna is a child of a broken home, longing for the father she never knew, and determined to overcome a chaotic start in life.

Theo comes from privilege, but longs for true understanding and love beyond the material comfort he has always been used to.

When these two sensitive souls end up stuck in a lift with only a single sandwich to share, the connection is instantaneous.

Where Anna sees a confident and polished professional, the real Theo is a rather more complex and uncertain character.

And where Theo sees a strong maverick, Anna feels stuck in a life that can never quite allow her to forget her past history and the stable family life she never had.

Using a framework of anecdotes on which the narrative hangs, author Amanda Prowse brings her two different viewpoints to bear on the two intertwined lives. The love they share, with all its ups and downs, is a gentle reminder that love can find us, no matter where we come from.
