So there’s going to be a movie about Aaliyah’s life

There has been much contention about who should play Aaliyah in a new biopic release on her life, with one camp rooting for Disney Channel actress Zendaya and the other camp desperately wishing that the G.O.O.O music rapper Teyana Taylor had been chosen to depict the life and times of the More Than a Woman singer.

And as much as that interests us, we find ourselves more eager to find out what the biopic will reveal about the late singer’s marriage to R.Kelly.

According to Page Six  a lifetime biopic on Aaliyah’s will feature details on the songbird’s sordid and rather controversial marriage to the once sexually accused Pied Piper of R’n’B, R.Kelly.

It’s alleged that the two R’n’B singers were illegally and hastily married in 1994 when Aaliyah was only 15 years old and R.Kelly was 27.

For a very long time, the marriage was denied by Aaliyah and her family but when a marriage certificate surfaced they could no longer deny the allegations.

After Aaliyah tragically died in a plane crash in 2002, it is reported that the family annulled her marriage to the much older R.Kelly.

Although the biopic will focus on their marriage, Aaliyah and R.Kelly also had a professional relationship as he played both mentor and producer to the late singer.

The couple worked together on her Age ain’t Nothing But a Number album. Coincidentally, it was rumoured that the title was inspired by her romantic relationship with him.

The problem with doing a lifetime documentary of a person who has died is that they are no longer around to defend themselves or offer their side of the story.

We can only hope that the team behind this biopic will thoroughly research this alleged marriage and that it will be fair and respectful to both parties.

If done tastefully and respectfully this will surely be one of the best lifetime movies ever done on a musician.

Aaliyah was considered to be a music icon by many and she played a prominent role in the evolution of R’n’B music with her sultry lyrics and smooth dance moves.
