The Ghetto Funk singer first burst into the music industry in the Durban poetry and music scene before relocating to Johannesburg where she sung her way into the spotlight, performing at festivals across the country.

We chat to her about her big break in the music industry, her unique style and being part of the Red Bull Music Festival event.

Who is Moonchild?

My name is Moonchild Sanelly, a blue haired bombshell. I speak about speaking up, being authentic to yourself and being proud of who you are 100%.

When did you start singing? Have you always wanted to pursue a career in music?

As I long as I can remember. I grew up around music; my brother is a producer and we had a studio at home. I performed a lot as a child at community events and whenever I took to the stage with a new group in the hood. My mom was the one organising the gigs.

How did you get into the music industry?

I started performing in shows at DUT with a key focus in poetry and hip hop. Red Bull then discovered my music through an EP I was featured on with DJ Shimza, this was a part of the Soul Candi Album. As an independent artist, I’ve worked very closely with Red Bull for several years and we make an amazing team that challenges the game.

What are you currently working on in studio?

I am working on 3 EPs for the SA market with the Red Bull Music Studios in Cape Town and for the EU market with Das Kapital and another body of work with Damon Albarn. I’m so excited to connect with fans globally during my European tour, which kicks off in March and again in July.

What sort of musical territories would you love to explore in the future?

I'm going to the world. Red Bull and I are working on different vibes as I'm generally the free of genre artist. We are going gqom and trap. My electro stays alive. Just great music.

When can we expect an album?

Maybe end of the year.

You will be part of the Red Bull Music Festival, please tell us more about that?

Oh Jesu. It's going to be insanity. Fireworks. Conversion and power! The Red Bull Music Festival has been held in various cities including Los Angeles, New York and Paris. It will be hosting 80 artists over 6 days, in 9 venues. It aims to take festival goers on an excursion through musical history with a glance to SA music scene and culture. My performance is going to be electric and full of fire.

What are you looking forward to the most about the Red Bull Music Festival?

I am looking forward to creating exhilarating music, collaborating with diverse local talent and celebrating the South African music and culture scene

What can people expect from the festival?

They can expect a weekend full of energy, plenty of surprises, hot sounds and special guest performers.
