How did you become part of Insecure?
Issa emailed me details regarding auditions to play her best friend in late 2015. It took the team a long time to get the ball rolling with the auditions, I had even forgot about it. Seven months and five auditions later, I booked the show.
You have quite an important role on the show – does the weight of the character give you added pressure?
When we get the script, we always get different emotions. However we know what we’re doing is very timely. So if there’s any pressure, it’s just to make sure that we’re capturing these characters’ lives in a true and honest way. The Molly storyline resonates with a lot of women, I mean who hasn’t had to fight for what they believe they deserved?.
Are you and Issa just as closes behind the scenes as you are on camera?
I don’t think people understand how much of a delight Issa is. I love working with her on the show, her laughs and personality comes from a really deep place. What we have is so genuine and the mutual respect we have for each other is amicable. She opened doors for me when she told me about the Insecure audition, not a lot of people could do that and I’ll forever be grateful for that. I’m friends with her friends and we have fun times together.
Let’s talk about the representation of black women in entertainment – what are you thoughts about it? Do you think we are turning the tide?
I think we’re at a interesting place, we’ve been here before in the 90s and early 2000s with shows like Girlfriends and Living Single. These shows portrayed real friendships, but they got replaced with reality TV that shows women hating and throwing chairs at each other. I personally have never been in such, I don’t understand those kind of friendships. We’re now hungry for content that represents black women’s reality, where women support one another, the good and the bad side of most black female friendships.
What other work are you busy with besides Insecure?
I’m working on my other show called First Jan. We released the trailer in 2015, fast forward to 2017 we’re still working on it, as you know TV takes time.
To shift focus a bit, what influenced the decision for you to stay a virgin?
I’m waiting for marriage, whenever I meet the right man and we get married that’s when I’m going to let go of my virginity.
