#RIPHughMasekela I once got a chance to Jam with him on National TV and for the past 2 Years, I tried to recreate this moment at Fill Up but he wasn’t able to commit to coming to perform with me. I will cherish this moment forever but most importantly the wisdom you shared. ??

?Cant describe how sad I am by the passing of Uncle Hugh Masekela. A true OG of the music industry and a mentor to young minds all over the world. Its very rare for older artists to embrace youngers but Hugh did that for me and I will always be grateful. Thank you for everything you stood for and thank you for bringing joy and happiness to so many people at home and abroad. Your legacy will live forever and ever. REST IN PEACE ??????

Trust Bra Hugh to quietly slip away on my birthday. We were meant to do a whole album together. For years we tried to get it together but it never worked out because he was traveling a lot. I remember he arranged Tai Chi classes for me and paid for them because he wanted me to de clutter my mind and spirit before we started working. When I had my car accident many years ago he was one of the first visitors to come see me after hospital. Bra Hugh lived. He lived his life to the fullest. So I’m not too sad, and I’m happy he is no longer suffering. And I will remember him always, especially on this day, the day of my birth and the day of his passing. He is leaving us a legacy so vast, a music book so big. You have done well with your life Bra Hugh. Your name will never be forgotten. Fly free son of the Soil. Fly free ??

Thank you for the music and the true stories you always told from your experiences in the world. A brother, a father, a hubby, a motivational speaker and published author. Baba, you were many things to many people. The impact you had on the world is indispute, even for young ladies who like weaves. we knew where you stood at all times. Having left your family to travel the world must’ve opened your eyes to the importance of loving the skin, hair we’re in as Africans. Aah Bra Hugh your musicality was on another plane. Thank you for shining your light so bright that even through your mistakes corrected, we learnt and shone our own lights. Thank you for validating me every time we met, whether it was about Khumbu or the gender violence work or better yet asking Why I’m not singing anymore. The cherry on top was when you would perform my hit song Abuti yo at your concerts- Wow. What’s weird though is that in some deep place in me, I kind of knew that I was interacting with you for the last time, when we worked together in CT last year. The jokes you were making as thandiswa and I stood watch at your door. I will always be in awe of you and a lil scared of you as I always was. Thank you from the pits of my stomach.
