What have you been up to since leaving Generations?

I’ve been working on a documentary, which took up a lot of my time. Aside from that, I haven’t been up to much, except for cameo roles here and there. I decided to go back to acting because I missed telling stories.

How did you get the role on The Herd?

My agent told me about the show. I was immediately drawn to it as it was extremely challenging for me as an actor. They sent me the brief of the story and I auditioned about four times.

What have been the highlights and challenges of playing the witch Mamngadi on The Herd?

I didn’t encounter any challenges, we were just having fun. Our common goal as a team was to make the show a success, which was beautiful. We supported and encouraged each other, so if someone came up with a suggestion, everyone would say ‘yes let’s do it like that.’ I also appreciate that the producers and directors gave us freedom to explore our characters.

I’m a Christian so having to play such a dark character was definitely a highlight in my career. It’s also very different to any other role I’ve played.

Are you back to acting full time?

Yes. I’m working on a web series with Bongi Ndaba and Bheki Sibiya that we are creating and producing ourselves. I think it’s important as actors to create opportunities for ourselves because we have so many stories to share.

If there’s one thing you could change about the industry, what would it be?

I wish the industry would have more opportunities, especially for actors who’d love to branch into producing. There’s an abundance of untold stories and although we’re slowing getting there, I think we’re lacking when it comes to opening up the industry to upcoming producers, especially female producers.
