Celebrities get very few opportunities for living lives away from the spotlight.

From red carpet appearances, to being on set, endorsing brands and promoting their work, the price involving fame means that exposure comes with the territory.

But does that exposure mean they aren’t entitled to their privacy?

Especially when fans start thinking of celebrities as being public property whose movements should be monitored and whose actions should constantly questioned?

Actress Mina Kunis is one of a fair number of celebrities who refuse to go near any form of social media anymore as it’s become a place where people are the most critical for all the wrong reasons.

To her, it’s become all about who can be “the loudest, the angriest, or the most negative.”

And to be honest – she isn’t wrong.

While social media networks can be a wholesome, hilarious and positive experience, it often feels like the toxicity drowns out the voices of those who are simply trying to be the voice of reason and positivity in a climate fraught with ugly politics and bigotry.

Most of our local celebrities and influencers each have a strong and visible presence online, but they’re often subjected to the worst kind of trolling possible – strong and outspoken women like Bonang, Pearl Thusi and Boity Thulo are just an example.

Just recently, in two separate incidents, Bonang had to deal with a troll whose shame-y line of questioning was quickly and effectively shot down with Bonang’s epic “My vagina, my rules” clapback.

According to Channel24 she also recently told another pest off for criticising her choice of music at her 31st birthday party.

It’s definitely not easy online - and given that celebs have to deal with that kind of nonsense on a regular basis, it’s understandable that some people just choose not to have a visible presence on social media networks at all.

Take Jennifer Lawrence for instance.

After her nudes were hacked, we can understand why she’s so wary of getting an official Facebook or Twitter page.

Another celeb who loathes the idea of social media networks, according to InStyle, is Kristen Stewart, who finds the idea of “trampling on someone’s life without any regard” abhorrent and hates the idea that everyone is playing paparazzi and informant.

Jake Gyllenhaal reiterated the need to switch off by stating that he doesn’t want to live in the spotlight offline – a fair point since they constantly need to be switched on for work.

So while celebrities like the Kardashians embrace the whole idea of oversharing – something that’s proved to be extremely profitable for them – we need to remember that not everyone wants the spotlight beyond what their work entails.
