Renowned South African fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee (GJC) has exclusively revealed to City Press that he will this year launch not only his often requested menswear collection, but also a men’s underwear range.

The brand will now become a full-rounded service in time for SA Fashion Week, scheduled to run from October 23 to 27.

“This summer at SA Fashion Week it is going be very much 50-50. You can expect a very big collection this season. I’m thinking 60 pieces. We are way ahead of schedule with it and it’s fun,” said Coetzee.

The high-profile designer scouted around the world for an entirely new menswear team. They now reside in South Africa full time, working on the collection and teaching aspirant tailors all about the business of menswear.

Although this will be his first full collection the public will have access to, Coetzee has secretly designed menswear and underwear for some of his high-profile clients.

Now the country will finally get to see the masculine side of the brand.

“It’s really the masculine side of GJC. GJC womenswear was feminine and whimsical but the menswear is quite masculine,” he said.

“For me it feels like now I finally have everyone off my back. It’s great. It’s a full-rounded service now. It was always awkward if the bride had to dress in one place and the groom in another. For the recent Vodacom Durban July, it was so comfortable with Minnie Dlamini and Quinton Jones doing their outfits at the same place.”

Coetzee’s brand has always specialised in bridal wear, which is their signature design aesthetic.

City Press caught up with him at his recent bridal soirée in Johannesburg, where he showed off some his favourite bridal gowns.

“We specialise in wedding dresses at GJC. Each and every one of the brides you see here today is a real bride.

“In this way you see it is a real bride who had a real experience with GJC, and she is sharing it with everyone.”

One of the brides who showed off her gown was television actress and businesswoman Enhle Mbali Maphumulo, whose married superstar DJ Black Coffee in 2011.
