It’s that wonderful time of the year when we dress up as ghosts and ghouls or the current year's latest pop culture sensation and go out and have fun.

I personally love handing out candy to everyone in my office on the day and usually do a bit of dressing up myself. But sometimes you just don’t really have the money to fork out for a really dope costume.

So what do you do?

Well, here are a few simple costumes you can do without breaking the bank and that don’t require lots of effort.

Ariana Grande in the God is a woman music video

What you’ll need: A white bodysuit, purple paint, purple hair spray and a ponytail.

Get this white bodysuit from MRP for R79.99 and then some body paint like these from Art Attack which will range from about R35 to R55 and get creative. Spray some purple hairspray in your hair or get hair chalk from Crazy Store for R49.98 in a lavender colour and decorate your hair.

You can find a cheap lavender lipstick in a Chinatown store, or try this lipgloss from Essence for R69,95

Rosie the Riveter

What you’ll need: A red head scarf, denim shirt and jeans, and optionally big hoop earrings.

This feminist hero never goes out of style. Get this denim shirt from MRP for R179.99 and wear a pair of your favourite jeans while making sure you tie your read scarf/bandana around your head the proper way and off you go.

Anna Wintour

What you’ll need: big round glasses, a bob (or a wig if you’re not ready to commit) and a faux fur coat or floral dress

Wear your most fashionable outfit, or check out pictures of Anna online and get something similar to one of her outfits.

Get these big round sunglasses from Woolworths for R99 and drape a faux fur jacket or coat over your shoulders and just pair the rest of the outfit with all the best accessories you have.

The Queen of Hearts

What you’ll need: a deck of cards, glue, red lipstick and a cute red outfit

Get a deck of cards and glue them all together to make yourself a neck piece and then use your fave red lipstick to draw a heart on your lips. Pair this with a nice red dress or top and skirt and you’re good to go.

The dummy from Saw

What you’ll need: white face paint, red lip liner and lipstick, black eye liner, a red bowtie, a white shirt and jeans

I did this look a few years ago. Get white face paint from Crazy Store for R29,99 or hack it and ask your lightest friend to lend some foundation and then dust maizena over it (This is what I did). Works like a charm. Then draw red circles on your face with red lip liner, and you can add two black lines down from the corners of your mouth to give the whole dummy effect.

Then you just need black jeans, a white shirt, a red bowtie and a black jacket. And you could possibly drive around on a tricycle all day.

Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction

What you’ll need: White shirt, back pants and a black bob

This one is simple but quite easy. You just need a long white shirt like this one from MRP for R139.99 over black pants and you’ll need to be barefoot to really complete the look. You could even draw a little blood coming from your nose to allude to when she overdoses in the movie.

Serena Williams

What you’ll need: a tutu, headband, arm bands and sneakers and a tennis racket

Wear one of the GOATs most iconic looks from this year. You can get a tutu from Crazy Store for R49.98 and just pair it with a black tshirt or a sports shirt if you have one. And don’t forget the sneakers. Then you’ll need to style your hair like hers and you’ll need armbands and a headband (which you can get from Clicks for R30) and you can borrow a tennis racket from your sporty friends.
