A week in the life of an editor

accreditation

One of my editors once told me when I first joined his team that he wanted us out of the office more than in front of our laptops.

That's not always possible but it certainly is wise advice for two reasons.

For one, we spend too much time sitting. And it can be just as bad as smoking. Read about the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle here and the number of cigarettes you smoke per day that can increase your risk of heart disease here. Both terrifying.

Secondly, our jobs as writers and journalists is to stretch our legs to discover new faces and spaces, network and think of ways to collaborate and sometimes just offload with peers who you forget face the same challenges.

Launches can be the most fun and glamorous way to do all of the above. Because we all know that our diaries are not always packed with rsvps to sip bubbles and bag lots of goodies as everyone thinks.

There are a couple of things I got excited about this week.

One of them is Trenery. They've started a collection called Trenery Guild where they partner up with artists like Swaady Martin of Yswara who makes the most sophisticated handcrafted teas and Marie Aoun of Saint D'Ici with exquisite, ethically sourced and unisex natural perfumes to interpret all the things we love about the brand. There are other creatives involved that have collaborated with them. Watch out for in-store activations and art works where each concept will come to life.

On the day that they presented their collection, handpicked industry players gathered at David Krynauw's field of dreams where we had the most special lunch prepared by incredibly-talented Wandile Mabaso of scallops, lobster tails, micro veg and the finest wines.

Earlier in the week, Dermalogica launched two new products in their existing Ultra-Calming range for thirsty, sensitive skin. I've long been a fan of the skin care company even before I travelled with them to Barcelona for one of their annual conferences around the world.

Cannot believe that was around 10 years ago. Since, I've sworn by their daily microfoliant which I believe solves all skin evils.

My skin's been acting up of late and I'm not sure if it's hormones but my chin and decollete are bearing the brunt.

I wonder if these two lifesavers can help? They're supposed to fight symptoms like redness, dehydration and issues caused by pollution, climate change, inflammatory skin issues and stress etc.

The first is the calm water gel (R890 for 50ml which gives you 87 uses). Your skin just sponges up the ultra-light moisturiser (aloe base makes sense) and the barrier defense booster (R1 220 for 30ml) which is oil based and locks in hydration after you layer it over the gel.

You can just mix the two if you're in a hurry.

Don't use it if the affected area you're trying to treat (acne, eczema, psoriasis, post-laser or peel skin) is inflamed and feels hot to the touch.

What did I get up to the rest of the week? I'm not sure you'll be as interested in the reports I had to submit, listening tools I scanned on the minute, emails I answered, Skype calls I made, workshops I attended and time I spent trawling social media, magazines and newspapers for inspiration.

It's much more fun sharing info about the out-of-office stuff!
